Enhancing cardholder security with Strong Customer Authentication (SCA)
The European Commission introduced the Payment Services Directive 2 (PSD2) to make payments safer, increase consumer protection and to foster innovation and competition. One of the more significant impacts of PSD2 relates to eCommerce transactions and the need to implement Strong Customer Authentication (SCA) from 14th September 2019.
What is Strong Customer Authentication (SCA)?
SCA refers to the introduction of additional security authentication requirements for online card transactions over €30 (exemptions can apply). Customers will no longer be abe to check online using just their card details and will need to provide an additional form of identification, known as two factor authentication’ (2FA).
What does SCA mean for my business?
To meet the new SCA requirements the card schemes have mandated the use of a new authentication framework called 3D Secure (3DS) v2 and Elavon has already upgraded its platforms to accommodate this. All you have to do is talk to your payment gateway provider to ensure that your eCommerce payments are ready to be authenticated using 3D Secure v2, offering your customers a better user experience and an increased chance of authorisation.
